Ariana Mesaros informed them that she believed the uniform was a bad representation of their school, and stated how embarrassing it is for her to wear the uniform.
The Article also mentioned a case study about how college cheerleader uniforms are more revealing, which creates issues of more cheerleaders developing eating disorders. My response to this article overall is one with a smile. It is really nice to hear that there are girls willing to fight for a more modest appeal for uniforms that are more commonly looked upon as being skimpy. They are changing the standards a bit from how society seems to want things to be or tells things to be, into about how they feel it should be personally. They want to help change the ideals of society. They can cheer on their team without drawing as much physical attention.
What are your thoughts on cheerleader uniforms? What do you think is the message sent to boys and girls, men and women with the cheerleader uniforms worn (from child uniforms through pro-sport uniforms)?

I was very surprised and glad as well when I read that article. Society condones the skimpy outfits and they have been getting worse and worse each generation. It doesn't even phase people anymore to see so much skin... I hope that these girls are starting a trend and that we will continue to see modesty come back.
ReplyDeleteThere was an article (I'll try to find it again and post it)I read recently, about models for cars that are wearing more modest clothes, although it said that it's because the companies are trying to attract to be more women.
I just wanted to say, then link doesn't work. Unless it's just my computer? But that aside, I am so glad that this captain went to the school board to address this issue. First of all, not every girl who is a cheerleader is one to show off her body. Some girls cheer mainly because they enjoy bringing together team spirit and all that ra-ra stuff. Also, I'm pleased because I know young girls, young like 8 and 9 that cheer and have skimpy outfits which show off there tiny unformed female bodies. Sometimes I think to myself, What are they teaching these young girls are their body image?? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThe link is fixed now.
ReplyDeleteIts amazing and encouraging that the cheerleaders themselves are asking for less revealing uniforms. Its awful to know that skimpy uniforms inadvertently promote eating disorders. Good for those girls and their coach for fighting against it.
